Project: The North Sea

In the North Sea project, Stavanger2008 explores the relations between the Norwegian West Coast, with Rogaland in particular, and the East Coast of Scotland and Northern England.

Included in the project is a silent movie concert during the Haugesund Film Festival.
The Scottish film that will be shown is «The Rugged Island, a Shetland Lyric» from 1934. Script and direction: Jenny Gilbertson. The story is about a young couple on Shetland, who are torn between the choice of emigrating to Australia or to stay at home and try to make a living and to look after their aged parents.

We will also screen Peter Lykke-Seests «A Story about a Boy» from 1919. The boy in question falls under suspicion of stealing the teacher’s watch, and, fearing punishment, he runs away on a ship, ending up as a shepherd on a farm.

The score has been composed especially by Catriona McKay from Scotland and Nils Økland from Norway, and will be played for the first time by Harald Hårfagre Chamber Orchestra, supplemented with guest musicians from Scotland.
