Norway stiffens admission to citizenship

2008-08-28

– As a Norwegian citizen you get more rights and benefits in the Norwegian society, but a citizenship also entails certain obligations and responsibilities, reads UDI web-site and changes the admission criteria for Norwegian citizenship.

Since the 1st of September applicants for Norwegian citizenship are to prove their command of Norwegian language and pay 2500 NOK fee. Each applicant of 18-55 years old should submit documents verifying that he/she has passed a 300-hours course of Norwegian language. The course costs about 15 300 NOK, otherwise one should pass the language exam held by Folkeuniversitetet on a payment basis as well.

Beside a good language command, one should also spend at least 7 years of last 10 years period in Norway. One is not supposed to have had any crime offences committed. More info you can find at Norwegian Immigration Service UDI web-site http://www.udi.no
